Image credit Netflix Ever since I was young, I have loved zombies. I grew up watching The Walking Dead, which is now in its final season. I played popular zombie video games such as Telltales The Walking Dead or The Last Of Us, which is receiving its own television show on HBO. I have seen and viewed some of the best zombie films to this date. And yet, the latest Netflix zombie show, All Of Us Are Dead, has taken the number one spot in my heart as one of the best modern zombie shows - possibly one of the best zombie TV shows I do love all the other shows like The Walking Dead which has been my main zombie show for years such as Z Nation, The Strain and more, All Of Us Are Dead has recently become my favorite zombie show. And right here, I’m going to convince you the reasons as to why you should watch this amazing series next, trying my best to avoid spoilers, as a seasoned zombie lover. Image credit NetflixAll Of Us Are Dead Jumps Right Into The Seriousness Of The Situation Something that I really like about All Of Us Are Dead is that it jumps right into the seriousness of the situation, unlike many other apocalypse shows or movies that build up the problem. Like for example - in The Walking Dead in the first episode, we do see Rick trying to escape hordes of zombies, but the focus of the episode isn’t really on the dead - it’s more on Rick trying to find his family. That’s fine and dandy, but if I’m watching a zombie show, I’m probably going to be watching it for the zombies and how the people survive in this situation. Some TV shows take a while to get to that point, but All Of Us Are Dead moves right into the seriousness of the situation from the first scene, and then shows how quickly one virus can spread if not contained. It almost feels like a car crash when the shit starts to hit the fan early on. You know it’s going to be bad, but you can’t help but look at the horrible things that are happening, from the first bite to the next, which is what captures your attention so quickly into the show. Image credit NetflixThe Story Is Contained Mainly To One Location In All Of Us Are DeadI have a feeling I’m going to be using The Walking Dead in comparison to a lot of my points here, because this is another big one. In All Of Us Are Dead, I love the fact that the story is contained to one area. In The Walking Dead, the story has expanded so much in Season 11, and while the addition of new storylines and new worlds and new characters can be a good thing, sometimes, it doesn’t always pan out and it complicates the story still not a big fan of the Reaper storyline in Season 11. However, All Of Us Are Dead does the complete opposite of that, instead focusing almost entirely on one location - Hyosan High School. I know what you’ll say - TWD didn’t do that in the beginning and was only focused in the quarry, and to that I say you’re right. That’s what made the show good in the first place, its focus on one particular area per season, further pushing the storyline and the characters into danger without adding unnecessary villains to the mix. But it’s lost that spark down the line with the inclusion of many different groups and many different communities that screw everything up. All Of Us Are Dead thrives on its almost sole location, being able to focus on the ways in which the students bond with each other, learn to survive, and the ingenious ways they use to kill zombies when no one else is there. It gives the actors and actresses their time to shine while you, as the viewer, connect with their characters. Image credit NetflixAll Of Us Are Dead Is NOT Afraid To Kill Anyone - And That’s A Good Thing This was one of my favorite parts of All Of Us Are Dead. This Netflix series is not afraid to kill anyone. I won’t reveal who dies in this show, but let me just say I was getting serious flashbacks to TV series’ like Game of Thrones or Breaking Bad, where important main characters are killed off, as if with the snap of a makes these deaths even bigger is that they aren’t mindless deaths that are just there for the gore, or for the sake of killing off a character that needed to die like Cersei’s stupid demise by bricks in Game of Thrones. Every person who dies in All Of Us Are Dead passes in their own different way, which further pushes the stories of the main characters in the show. These people who die could be a best friend, a teacher, a love interest, or anything else. There are some truly heartbreaking deaths here, but All Of Us Are Dead so willingly kills them off that I can appreciate each one for meaning something. It shows the reality of a zombie outbreak - most likely, the people you love are not going to survive, so you better cherish them now while they are still on the TV screen. Image credit NetflixThe Outside Story Featuring The Military And The City Survivors Is Just As Interesting This was another big thing that I loved about All Of Us Are Dead. While I was just talking about how great it was that the show almost completely focused on the high school students as its main story, All Of Us Are Dead also utilizes the whole city of Hyosan and the military near it to further show the outbreak outside of the school. And it’s done fantastically. In twelve episodes, we are given a truly brutal look at what it would be like to live in a highly populated area during a zombie outbreak. We see multiple stories that don’t overtake the main one within the high school, but are still just as interesting, and don’t over-complicate the also intriguing to see how the military and regular people adapt and change during a circumstance like this, and the heavy moral decisions they must make in order to save people. When that duality is shown, of no one really being good or evil in this situation, it feels a lot more realistic than most antagonist stories in zombie shows. All Of Us Are Dead reminded me a lot of Will Smith’s I Am Legend, in the way that no human is really the ultimate villain - the infection is. The virus is. And that’s what makes this such a great zombie show. Image credit NetflixThe Zombie Situation Evolves In A Way Many Other Zombie Shows Don'tI really don’t want to spoil too much here, so let me just say this - the zombies in this show are unlike anything you have ever seen before. Mild spoiler, but the people who are bitten turn quick in this show, almost World War Z levels of quick, which is what causes this epidemic to spread so easily. However, this show does something with its zombies that isn’t done quite common, creating an even more intriguing storyline that could potentially carry itself into another season, if ordered by I don’t want to reveal what exactly happens with these zombies because you should find out for yourself, but yeah, you should be afraid - very afraid. And boy, am I scared when watching this show. Just imagine a whole entire horde of zombies racing after you - God, I’m shaking just thinking about it. If zombies are your thing as much as it is mine, seriously, watch All Of Us Are Dead. It’s a fantastic series with a well-written plot that will capture your attention from the first scene, and has truly become one of my favorite pieces of modern zombie horror. How will a bunch of hot-headed teenagers diffuse this incomprehensible situation?REVIEW Imagine this for a second If Stranger Things’—another crowd puller by Netflix—was made with Korean creative sensibilities in mind, and the entire cast and crew be stationed in Korea, and had M. Night Shyamalan as its director… That’s All of Us are Dead’ in a Lee Jae-kyoo project regurgitates—and sort of cements its position in world cinema, yet again—as to why all of us should pay close attention to artists from Korea the K-everything rage is NOT over nothing, guys! What starts off as a harmless in- between-classes shiz at Hyosan High School soon takes the shape of a full-blown state crisis, with kids biting chunks of flesh off of each other, twisting their bodies in abnormal poses and positions, and gurgling out blood… human blood. This turn’ of events can directly be credited to a certain group of bullies—not entirely though—and the gravity of this emergency is amplified by a lab-made virus umm, rings a bell?. While the rest of the school is off to drain and drink human bodies, a sizable gang of classmates fight it out to stay afloat and make it to the other side of this epidemic if that’s a possibility at things can qualify as far-fetched’ and/or unbelievable’ since the pandemic blindsided us with its presence in 2020. And, this story just transports one back to those initial days of confusion scary PPE kits, fights among peers over who brought the virus home, and the 12-episode, lengthy show is by far the finest work on the apocalyptic nature of mankind shows in simple, coherent terms why science-meets-human-intervention is always a lethal combo. Through hurried—and that is very much a compliment—storytelling and an anxiety- inducing pace of execution, Jae-kyoo takes us through the various stages of an engineered calamity from seeding to whatever crazy reasoning the culprits has to offer to its very end. Since we mentioned urban legends and folklore in our introduction, it’s interesting to note an excerpt from one of the first few episodes, where a dejected young girl says, “If no one is on your side, is it okay to kill?” Her wise words—the series is laden with such epiphanies—remind us of Mary Shelley’s classic dialogue from Frankenstein’ “It is true, we shall be monsters, cut off from all the world; but on that account we shall be more attached to one another.” In essence, All of Us are Dead’ is both a sci-fi and a case study on humans’ survival instincts some basic, others ugly. All of Us Are Dead’ asks pertinent, yet uncomfortable questions pertaining to human nature when there’s room for such liberties, and throws in scientific jargon where it’s necessary. It is this unique fashion of presenting the narrative—a perfect blend of human awakening and what havoc it’s capable of wreaking—that makes this show one of the best in the genre thus far. Another aspect of the supernatural that is, although seen in the past in Split’, fascinating is the intertwining of metaphysical entities such as zombies with other shows that barely touch upon topical plot points just to ensure it resonates, this series gets to the bottom of things without being too heavy or frustrating for its viewer. In it, we have the classic troupe of betrayal, class distinction, teen pregnancy and how a certain section of the society bullies those beneath them aka the rich brat syndrome. Through motifs and metaphors, All of Us Are Dead’ intends to say the joke is really on you. The young actors in the show, and we mean all of them, deserve a standing ovation for pulling off a subject—that is often frowned upon—with such earnestness. Yes, the gore can come off as too ghastly for television at times but one gets accustomed to the idea of that level of brutality on screen as the show progresses. Allow yourself some patience with this one.All of Us Are Dead’ is a bloodbath not meant for your average Jane, or Joe it is dark, dirty and strips humans of all dignity that’s regarded as a prerequisite to function in a civilized society. All of Us Are Dead is a South Korean series that takes on the zombie genre and, yes, finds a few new things to say within it. The show is set – like Squid Game – mostly in a single location. Our heroes and villains are the teenaged students of a high school which has become ground-zero in an outbreak of a virus that can cause, well, you know what. As the students realise that they have been abandoned and the government and military would rather contain them with the outbreak, than try to rescue them and risk the virus escaping, then it's on for young and old. But mostly young. All of Us Are Dead is based on a wildly successful web-only cartoon series, which maybe explains how it could be so quickly rushed into production. There was a pre-existing blueprint for this show which the makers have followed pretty closely. All of Us Are Dead does a fantastic job of introducing a large core cast and establishing a lot of characters as distinct personalities. The teen-soap elements that justify the12-hour running time are all present, with crushes, betrayals and redemptions all coming thick and fast. At times, All of Us Are Dead is as much Skins as it is, err 'Brains...', but there is always another bout of horrific violence to look forward to as well. It's been 20 years since Alex Garland and Danny Boyle resurrected the zombie movie with 28 Days Later. Which might explain why it is both a good and a frustrating feature film to watch. The Edge of War takes place between 1932 and 1938. The bright-eyed and hopeful young British and German Oxford graduates of the opening scenes are about to take up their careers in various positions within the governments of their countries. Six years later, as chance would have it, this same group who once quaffed stolen bubbly on the banks of the Thames are now facing each other across an ideological divide, as British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain prepares to meet Adolf Hitler at what would become an infamous summit. The Edge of War might be revisionist and the young characters at its heart are all fictional, but we are not in Inglourious Basterds territory here – and even though there are tension and surprises, the ending of the film is never in doubt. Which is maybe a fatal flaw in any thriller. However, Jeremy Irons is terrific as Chamberlain – nearly atoning for the trainwreck of House of Gucci, but not quite – while former child star George MacKay Peter Pan and the rest of the younger British and German cast are all absolutely fine. Munich The Edge of War is a well-made, sturdy and polished film. I really wouldn't have minded seeing it on a big screen, or as a limited is now available to stream on Netflix. Spycraft This series dropped about a year ago, but the success of Munich The Edge of War and others seems to have pushed it back up the ratings. The show also states beyond any doubt that any prominent foreign businessman or politician who stayed in a Russian hotel would be filmed, no matter what they were getting up to in their hotel room. Seen 30 years after it was first released, it's pretty clear – even if it wasn't at the time – that director Geoffrey Wright was far too in love with the spectacle of the film and didn't have a clue about drawing credible or believable characters. Literally everyone on screen is a two-dimensional cliché. The film's continued appeal to exactly the bullies and cowards Wright thought he was “exposing” is the sad proof of that. There are a lot of under-seen and under-appreciated Aussie films in the vaults. I'm disappointed – but not surprised – that Netflix have chosen to thrust this one back into the daylight.
